Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round or square baking pan.
2. In a bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
3. Beat in the egg and vanilla.
4. Stir in buttermilk, then fold in flour, baking soda, and salt. Mix until just combined.
